Dustie, the 17-40 is an L lens. And I thought that for landscape, you want the max depth of field possible, right? Even at f/4, I doubt one would have enough depth of field to get both the rail & the building in focus, let alone the grass in front of the building. And most lenses actually are sharp at f/8 or below. So I doubt a fast lens wouldn't help me here. Maybe a specialized landscape lens like a T/S lens. But I don't have that kinda money.

http://img43.imageshack.us/img43/719...ger9437web.jpg Too noisy with a dark exposure. And noise reduction was already at 70 or 75.
f/4 does not work very well under low light condition. I have an 85L f/1.2 which works really well under low light. You can get a regular 85mm f/1.8 which also works well under low light situation for 1/5 of the price.

Or you can alway bracket your exposure under different aperatures to learn how your lens works under a certain lighting situation.

DOF and lowlight you have to compromise somewhere. As for your subject, it's not too close so I dont think you will have much brokeh....

Dustie, I think the 2 styles are different. You're talking about portraiture. In landscape, one wants everything from foreground to the background to be in focus. At any rate, even with a good lens, the problem remains the same. There are a few strong lights on an otherwise dark surrounding, as well as brick walls which fall in the middle part of the intensity scale. [I think I've tried pushing 4 stops with exposure and still didn't get the light to dim, so exposure bracketing didn't help here]. And, the DoF of telephoto lenses is very thin wide-open, even at large distance (that's how they can produce the nice bokeh that they're known for), so one would lose the sharpness of the foreground elements.

Another thing is that the wide-angle lens and telephoto lens will create different perspectives to the photo. I tried the same scene with at 75mm, very different.

P, để hôm nào tui kiếm mấy tấm hinh xấu xấu rồi do B&W conversion. lol... only do that to make a bad photo look good.

Dangtri chick ,

I think you can apply the "Zone system" in CS4 to light up the sky and define the clouds in pic #1, and it would be nicer

Sag-man, if you ain't got what it takes to handle me, you're welcome to go somewhere else.

Faithie, why would I want to get out of this girl suit since you like women more than men?

I take photos for my own pleasure. Lâu lâu đem ra khoe chơi. Ai thích thì coi, không thích thì thôi.

Many reasons: 1) I saw someone did an amazing HDR of the same building (with the moon over it and all, probablly summer sky). So I thought I should give it a try. I'm not doing it the same way she did. It was difficult, I have much to learn. 2) want to record the landmark around campus.

Muốn coi hình nữa không?

Ne`, that's her pic. http://www.flickr.com/photos/1083261...7601827078600/ Not an HDR, but her sky is more interesting since it got a moon. Not sure whether that was photoshoped in.

You need a somewhat decent camera, and a tripod, and some patience. Then you need to learn a bit about depth of field. And just go out and shoot.

One last look at the summer:

Yeah, she's pretty good at both taking photos and processing with Photoshop. She & her bf have a studio now.

You probably scared the bee away.
