NTLDR: couldn't open drive,multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1) error on Windows XP

Installed new HD-Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 80gb. Ran the xp setup from disk. All seemed to load properly. Rebooted machine, Computer screen came up, then the following message:

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)
NTLDR: couldn't open drive,multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)

When running set up, I did not run any special SCSI driver during set up. Ran XP Repair console and found Boot list, and can see files in DOS mode.

How do proceed? Bios issue, SCSI driver issue, IDE cable issue, Pin configuration on HD, ? I am lost....

Thanks,

Take all your disks out, you might go to bios change to boot to hard drive first, see what happens

good luck

If BIOS has virus checker option, make sure you turn it off.

OR

Make sure the IDE HD connects to the primary IDE slot not the secondary one.

OR

You have an incorect ARC path in your boot.ini file. This problem is easy to be fixed by editing the boot.ini file but it involves more steps if you use NTFS file system.
To correctly identify the ARC path, you need to determine some or all of the following:

- How many IDE controllers in your PC
- How many IDE HDs in your PC
- What controller the IDE HDs connect to
- How many SCSI controllers in your PC
- How many SCSI HDs in your PC
- What controller the SCSI HDs connect to
- What HD the OS resides

The popular ARC path should be in the form of:

multi(x)disk(0)rdisk(y)partition(z)

Where:
multi(x) is the controller #x (for SCSI, IDE, EIDE controller. IDE controller have more priority than SCSI controller)
disk(0): this parameter is here but not used in case of "multi" controller
rdisk(y) is the disk #y on the previously mentioned controller
partition(z) is the partition #z in the previously mention disk.

Example:
if you have 2 controllers (1 IDE + 1 SCSI) and 1 HD on each controller and each HD has only 1 partition then:

If OS resides on your IDE HD then your ARC path is:
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)

If OS resides on your SCSI HD then your ARC path is:
multi(1)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)

If you get confused then just provide me the required info. I will suggest you the correct ARC path.

Note: If the file system is NTFS then you need to use NTFS pro / NTFS-DOS to access the boot.ini file. Another method is to boot the PC to XP from the NTFS bootdisk (this bootdisk also needs the correct ARC path in its boot.ini file)

Thanks all,

Followings are my answer:

1. I replaced the HardDrive, only one will be installed.
2. 120GB Seagate
3. Only one partition. I deleted partition, and created a new one, still give me the same error.
4. Window XP Pro.
5. I can't access to boot.ini file.
6. I swapped IDE controllers in my PC, still no luck
