Hi all:
Anyone can please show my cousin how to trouble shout with his home networking setup? My cousin got comcast cable internet service, then it his 1st computer worked fine without a router. Then when he tried to setup through D Link router, he could not get on the internet on his both computers. Well, the D link router he got required a HOST NAME if used for cable modem, or LOG IN name and Password if used for DSL. He called comcast for a HOST NAME but likely Comcast doest not require a HOST NAME...then he ended up with second option which he tried to log in name and password in the DSL setup box. It did not work either. The problem here is the WAN connection probably, LAN worked fine on both computers. So would it be any other easy way around to get this work? Any plug and play routers compatible with comcast cable internet? Help please. Thank you all. |

Most routers have option for HOST NAME" but HOST NAME is not required for COMCAST ---> just leave it blank.
Basic troubleshoot/fix: - power down Modem & router - power up router first wait for 1 minute - power up modem - release IP from each PC by "ipconfig /release" - renew IP for each PC by "ipconfig /renew" - view the IP address of each PC by ipconfig /all (do they have good IPs ie: 192.168.x.x ; note: 169.x.x.x is not a good IP) - can the PC talk to each other (use ping command to test) - can the PCs ping default gateway? (192.168.0.1 - I think D-LINK uses local IP 192.168.0.X) - check if they can access the internet. Extra steps: - login the router to check for the existance of WAN IP. - check if DHCP service enabled on the router Post back if you still have problems. ![]() Last edited by TUDCSVN; 01-26-2005 at 06:41 PM.. |

Hello Mevitinh,
I think if you follow Warclock instruction it will work. The steps of TUDCSVN not make sense. You have to power up the modem before power up your Router. Also Comcast has been update their network seen Jan-10. What it does is you can not register your new cable modem MAC address or new router device by web browser http://12.242.16.8 any more. You have to call them to register your modem MAC address. As long as your modem has been enter MAC address and Serial number into the database. You just open up the IE it will provide you to download setup application "downloadable_install_wizard.exe". If you have Comcast Pro packet and you're have multi router on your network you can reserve your IP address up to 5 IP. DHCP enable be the fault you don't have to worry about DHCP on your router. If you still have problem just hook your PC direct to your cable modem and see if you can access the NET, if it is I think you have to clone your PC Ethernet MAC address to you router MAC address. Good Luck |

M3LetsRace,
YOU said" Hello Mevitinh, I think if you follow Warclock instruction it will work. The steps of TUDCSVN not make sense. You have to power up the modem before power up your Router. ----------------------- However, "Router must always be on before turn on the cable modem" What's the difference between warclock suggestion & mine? Did he suggested turn on the the modem first? I can't find it in his suggestion and I don't realize any difference between his & mine in general. ![]() Last edited by TUDCSVN; 01-30-2005 at 07:28 AM.. |
